Asylum seekers cannot work for up to 180 days after petitioning for asylum. This can lead to homelessness or dangerous means of survival.
ANEW, the LGBTQ Asylum Project, provides housing, food and a stipend for basic needs. We seek to find pro bono legal services to help asylum seekers navigate the asylum process. Physical and mental health services are also available.
During the months of waiting for asylum to be granted, ANEW seeks to provide a sense of community. Leaving behind home and family is difficult. Sharing meals and participating in volunteer opportunities can help to ease an asylee’s transition to the United States.
Asylum seekers are a class of refugees who seek protection from torture and abuse in their home countries.
They must have faced persecution or feared persecution because of race, religion, nationality, or membership in a particular social group which has now included the LGBTQ community,
A port of entry or at a U.S. Citizenship &
Immigration Service’s service center is where a petition for asylum may be submitted.
